Description
Exercise Name: Categorize quadrilaterals
Math Missions: 3rd grade (U.S.) Math Mission
Types of Problems: 2

The first instance of Categorize quadrilaterals is under the 3rd grade (U.S.) Math Mission. This exercise explores the relationships between shapes in the quadrilateral hierarchy.

Types of Problems[]

There are two types of problems in this exercise:

  1. Determine which shapes are this: This is a multiple select problem. Users are supposed to select the answer choices that satisfy the classification in the question.
    Catquad

    Determine which shapes are this

  2. What are these shapes: This problem is multiple select also. This time they draw several shapes and theuser selects which of the quadrilateral types all the shapes satisfy.
    Catquad2

    What are these shapes

Strategies[]

This exercise is hard to get accuracy badges because the some of the classifications are very subtle. For example, a square is a rhombus and so user really needs to be careful before selecting the answer. The speed badges are medium. Once user is in the mindset, clicking the answers goes very quickly. Users should just be careful.

  1. Khan Academy considers a parallelogram to be a trapezoid. In other words the definition being used for trapezoid is 'at least one pair of parallel sides' as opposed to 'exactly one pair of parallel sides.'

Real-life Applications[]

  1. The ancient Egyptians from over 4000 years ago were very good at shapes and geometry. Every time the Nile burst its banks and flooded the planes, they had to use geometry to measure their gardens and fields all over again.
  2. Area and perimeter are used in many jobs for architecture and interior design.
