The Decimals on the number line 3 exercise used to appear under the 6th grade (U.S.) Math Mission, Arithmetic Math Mission and Pre-algebra Math Mission, but was apparently removed. This exercise practices visualization of decimals on a number line.

Types of Problems[]

There is one type of problem in this exercise:

  1. Move the dot to the correct spot: This problem provides a number line and a decimal number that may or may not be negative. The student is asked to move the dot to the correct spot on the number line.

Strategies[]

This exercise is easy to get accuracy badges and speed badges because there is only one type of problem and the manipulative is very easy to use.

  1. The number line always extends from negative two to positive two.
  2. The non-visible tick marks on the manipulate are labeled by tenths.
  3. It is sometimes easier to move from a larger number back a few spots rather than counting upwards every time.

Real-life Applications[]

  1. Decimals appear in every-day media to display information to consumers.
  2. Decimals are very common in shopping. Price tags, food labels, and receipts all contain decimals.
  3. At gas pumps, decimals are used to show how much gas is pumped and much it costs per gallon.
