## Types of Problems

There are two types of problems in this exercise:

2. Marking down an amount: This problem provides a situation where an amount is being marked down by some percentage. The user is asked to find either the amount of mark down or the final amount.

1. The mark up problems can ask for the amount of tax, the price with tax, the amount of mark up, or the price with mark up.
2. The mark down problems can ask for the amount of discount, or the final price after discount.
3. When performing mark up, multiply by ${1+r%}$ instead of multiplying by ${r%}$ and then adding on.
4. When performing mark down, multiply by ${1-r%}$ instead of multiplying by ${r%}$ and then subtracting off.

## Real-life Applications

1. Fractions, decimals, and percents are used in many sports such as basketball to determine how many field goals the player has made over how many they missed.
2. Decimals are very common in shopping. Price tags, food labels, and receipts all contain decimals.
3. At gas pumps, decimals are used to show how much gas is pumped and much it costs per gallon.
