The Dividing decimals 4 exercise appears under the 6th grade (U.S.) Math Mission, 7th grade (U.S.) Math Mission, 8th grade (U.S.) Math Mission, Arithmetic essentials Math Mission, Pre-algebra Math Mission, Mathematics I Math Mission and High school statistics and probability Math Mission. This exercise has complicated division problems with decimals.

Types of Problems[]

There is one type of problem in this exercise:

  1. Find the quotient: This problems has a division question that has decimals in both divisor and dividend. The user is asked to find the answer and provide it in the available space.
    Dd4-1

    Find the quotient

Strategies[]

This exercise is medium to get accuracy badges because there is a lot of room for error in the division algorithm with numbers of this type. The speed badges are hard unless one uses a calculator.

  1. The answers always come out to be a terminating decimal, so if user's decimal doesn't stop, they have made an error.
  2. To divide decimals, it is easiest to move both decimal points (the same number of spots) to eliminate the decimal in the number users are dividing by. Both decimals move the same number of spots because effectively they are multiplying numerator and denominator of a fraction by the same power of ten.
  3. The calculator hurts the spirit of the problem, but can be used to dramatically improve time.

Real-life Applications[]

  1. Decimals appear in every-day media to display information to consumers.
  2. Decimals are very common in shopping. Price tags, food labels, and receipts all contain decimals.
  3. At gas pumps, decimals are used to show how much gas is pumped and much it costs per gallon.
