Description
Exercise Name: Comparing fractions with the same numerator
Math Missions: 3rd grade (U.S.) Math Mission
Types of Problems: 3

The Comparing fractions with the same numerator exercise appears under the 3rd grade (U.S.) Math Mission. This exercise has users compare fractions in which the numerators are the same.

Types of Problems[]

There are three types of problems in this exercise:

  1. Select the correct inequality symbol: This problem has two fractions and asks the user to select which inequality symbol, either < or >, can be put between them to make a true inequality.
    Comp2-1

    Select the correct inequality symbol

  2. Put the fractions in increasing order: The dragging problem has three fractions that are to be placed in increasing numerical order.
    Comp2-2

Put the fractions in increasing order

  3. Correct number line: This problem asks the users to correctly identify which number line has a couple given fractions in the right order.
    Comp2-3

    Correct number line

Strategies[]

Knowledge of fractions and comparison techniques are all that is needed to be successful on this exercise.

  1. In all cases since the numerator is the same users can answer the problem by concentrating on the denominators.
  2. With common numerators, the smaller denominator implies a larger fraction.

Real-life Applications[]

  1. Fractions, decimals, and percents are used in many sports such as basketball to determine how many field goals the player has made over how many they attempted.
  2. Fractions are used in real life in many different ways, but they are most commonly used in the cooking, construction and science industries.
