The topic Comparing populations appears under the 7th grade (U.S.) Math Mission and High school statistics and probability Math Mission. This exercise provides information to help to understand how to compare particular populations.
Types of Problems[]
There are three types of problems in this exercise:
- Use the graph to compare: This problem provides some graphical display that compares two populations. The user is asked to determine which statements are accurate from a multiple select list.
- Compare with deviations: This problem provides a chart with measures of center and spread for two populations. The user is asked to use the variation measure to describe how different the populations actually are.
- Read the plots: This problem provides plots that can be used to compare populations. Users are asked to do this problem much like the previous one, but this time reading the information from the plot on their own.
Strategies[]
Knowledge of statistical displays should be seen as needed on this exercise.
- Research indicates that the "mean" of the measures of spread is sufficient for answering the problems.
- Some estimation should be expected on these problems and seems within the tolerance of the answer.
Real-life Applications[]
- A population is a summation of all the organisms of the same group or species, which live in a particular geographical area. The population of humans can be calculated by adding the total number of people that live on the planet, although it is not always accurate.
