Types of Problems

There are two types of problems in this exercise:

1. Use the distributive property: This problem provides a division problem that can be done by looking and the place values and distributing. The student is asked to find the correct numbers to place in the blanks to make the problem work correctly.

2. Use the commutative property of multiplication: This problem asks the student to perform a division property by reducing or dividing whole numbers and then multiplying afterwards.

Strategies

It is not necessary to know the names of the multiplication properties, but some familiarity could increase efficiency on this exercise.

1. The commutative property says order does not matter, i.e.,${a\times b=b\times a}$. On this exercise, it comes up because ${\frac{a}{c}\times\frac{a}{c}=b}$.
2. The distributive property says that ${\frac{(b+c)}{a}=\frac{b}{a}+\frac{c}{a}}$.

Real-life applications

1. Efficiency in multiplication and division will increase the ability to work confidently in fractions which occur in real-life often. The second problem type can be viewed as a "fraction" problem.
