The Exponents exercise is under the 6th grade (U.S.) Math Mission, 7th grade (U.S.) Math MissionPre-algebra Math Mission, High school geometry Math Mission and Mathematics I Math Mission. This exercise practices exponents and understanding how they represent repeated multiplication.

Types of Problems[]

There are two types of problems in this exercise:

  1. Select the equivalent expression: This problem presents an exponential expression. The user is asked to select an equivalent expression from a list on the right, or to indicate that none of the expressions are equivalent.
    Paze1

    Select the equivalent expression

  2. Evaluate expression: This problem presents an exponential question. The user is asked to write the correct answer in the appropriate spot.
    Paze2

    Evaluate expression

Strategies[]

This exercise is easy to get accuracy badges as long as one is familiar with the ideas of exponentiation as repeated multiplication. The speed badges are also easy because one is a multiple select and the numerical answer will be a relatively small integer.

  1. Research has seen numbers as high as .
  2. The selection of "none of the above" happens often, so be careful to read the answer choices carefully before making a selection.

Real-life Applications[]

  1. Exponents are used in Computer Game Physics, pH and Richter Measuring Scales, Science, Engineering, Economics, Accounting, Finance, and many other disciplines.
  2. Exponential Growth is a critically important aspect of Finance, Demographics, Biology, Economics, Resources, Electronics and many other areas.
  3. Exponential Decay is associated with Light, Sound, Sporting Fixtures, Dangerous Chemicals, and Radioactive Waste.
  4. Careers that use Exponents include Economists, Bankers, Financial Advisors, Insurance Risk Assessors, Biologists, Engineers, Computer Programmers, Chemists, Physicists, Geographers, Sound Engineers, Statisticians, Mathematicians, Geologists and many other professions.
