1. Round the number: This problem provides a number and a spot to which it is supposed to be rounded. The user is asked to round the number correctly to the spot requested and write it in the text box below.

Strategies

This exercise is medium to get speed badges because if user get into a habit they might not read carefully the space they want rounding to. The speed badges are medium because of the care that needs to be taken to read carefully.

1. Numbers can be asked to be rounded to whole numbers, decimals, or ones (which are whole numbers too of course). Read carefully!
2. Research has seen hundreds, thousands, ones (also called units by other people), hundredths and tenths.

Real-life Applications

1. Decimals appear in every day media to display information to consumers.
2. Decimals are very common in shopping. Price tags, food labels, and receipts all contain decimals.
3. At gas pumps, decimals are used to show how much gas is pumped and much it costs per gallon.
4. When one shops, chances are they pay a sales tax. If the sales tax is $3\%$ and they buy something for $$36.30$, the sales tax is $$1.089$, which is rounded to $$1.09$.
