The Reading pictographs 1 exercise appears under the 3rd grade (U.S.) Math Mission, Pre-algebra Math Mission and Mathematics I Math Mission. This exercise introduces the idea of a pictograph and basic analysis of pictographs.
Types of Problems[]
There are two types of problems in this exercise:
- Use the graph to find the number: This problem provides a pictograph and a key to interpreting the pictograph. The user is asked to use the pictograph to find the numerical answer to a question and provide the answer in a box.
- Use the graph to find the answer: This problem provides a labeled pictograph. The user is asked to interpret the pictograph to answer a related multiple choice question.
Strategies[]
Experience with pictographs may help, but is not necessary for success on this problem. It can be understood via examples.
- The scale for all the examples is one on this exercise.
- The graphs all utilize the Khan Academy badges.
- The Use graph to find the number problem often asks for the count of the badges of a particular user.
Real-life Applications[]
- Pictographs can be applied to almost anything in the real-world that involves groups of objects.
- Data and statistics appear in news reports and in the media every day.
- Statistics can be seen more frequently than calculus in every day life.
