Description
Exercise Name: Reflecting points on the coordinate plane
Math Missions: 6th grade (U.S.) Math Mission, 8th grade (U.S.) Math Mission
Types of Problems: 7

The Reflecting points on the coordinate plane exercise appears under the 6th grade (U.S.) Math Mission and 8th grade (U.S.) Math Mission. This exercise introduces the idea of reflectional symmetry in two dimensional space.

Types of Problems[]

There are seven types of problems in this exercise:

  1. Chemical symmetry: This problem presents a chemical position that can be represented on the coordinate axis. The student is asked to determine the symmetry of the given compound.
    Rp1

    Chemical symmetry

  2. Find coordinate in other graph: This problem provides a word problem with a situation that can be determined from a given graph. The student is asked to find the coordinates of the position after a certain reflection in context.
    Rp2

    Find coordinate in other graph

  3. Plot point and reflection: This problem gives a point and asks the student to plot the given point and it's reflection under certain given request.
    Rp3

    Plot point and reflection

  4. Name point after reflection: This problem gives a point and asks the student to name the point that they would get after reflecting the point as requested.
    Rp4

    Name point after reflection

  5. Determine the reflection that yields: This problem has a graph with a point that is supposed to be transformed into another point. The student is asked to determine which reflection would successfully move the point as requested.
    Rp5

    Determine the reflection that yields

  6. Reflect as directed: This problem asks the student to reflect the point as required in the problem.
    Rp6

    Reflect as directed

  7. What quadrant are we in: This problem asks the student to determine the quadrant that the reflection of a point will be in without providing a coordinate axis to work with.
    Rp7

    What quadrant are we in

Strategies[]

Knowledge of graphing is vital to doing well in this exercise. Accuracy badges and speed badges are medium difficulty based on experience with graphing.

  1. There are many different strategies with the problem types. Research will write them all up later at a different time.

Real-lie Applications[]

  1. Graphing can be used to measure stocks, insurance, and accounting.
