Graphing points
Graphing points 256
Exercise Name: Graphing points
Math Missions: 5th grade (U.S.) Math Mission, 6th grade (U.S.) Math Mission
Types of Problems: 1

The Graphing points exercise appears under the 5th grade (U.S.) Math Mission and 6th grade (U.S.) Math Mission. This exercise introduces the idea of plotting points on the Cartesian coordinate plane.

Types of Problems

There is one type of problem in this exercise:

  1. Graph the point: This problems provides a Cartesian coordinate grid and a point. The user is asked to move the orange dot from the origin to the coordinates provided.

    Graph the point

This exercise is easy to get accuracy badges because the only possibly sneaky part about graphing is keeping track of which direction to move first (right, then up). The speed badges are also easy because the manipulative is simple to maneuver.

  1. It seems a little easier if users go the larger coordinate value first, then count for the other coordinate.
  2. In graphing, the x-coordinate always comes before the y-coordinate (the letter x comes before y).

Real-life Applications

  1. Graphing can be used to measure stocks, insurance, and accounting.
