The Relate division to multiplication exercise appears under the 3rd grade (U.S.) Math Mission. This exercise explores strengthens the relationship between multiplication and division as inverse operations.

Types of Problems[]

There are two types of problems in this exercise:

  1. Fill in the blank: This problem has three pairs of related multiplication and division questions. The student is to insert the missing number in all six equations.

    Fill in the blanks

  2. Answer the questions: This problem has four equations that are all related to each other. The student is to type the correct answer in a box or select the correct option from a drop-down menu on four problems.

Strategies[]

This exercise is easy to get accuracy badges because the numbers are small. However, speed badges are hard to attain because there is more than one question to answer in each problem.

  1. On the first problem type, the answer for the first equation in a pair is the same as the answer to the second of the pair. The problem is supposed to stress the inter-relatedness of multiplication and division after all.
  2. On the second type of problem, a visual aid is sometimes (but not always) drawn.
  3. On the second type of problem, the first equation will tell you all three numbers that could possibly show up in any other problem. You can keep those three numbers in mind and fill in the other equations with the number that is missing from the triplet.

Real-life Applications[]

  1. Choreographers need to be able to divide the piece they want to perform, into smaller pieces so that everyone will be able to do and give their best, whether they dance or choreograph an orchestra. In the end of the day they need to flow together in harmony and they will use division to accomplish that.
  2. Division is used in group projects so the work is divided and each group member has their own role.
  3. A majority of law issues are arising now are about land division and who lived there first. This requires not just honesty, but also division.
  4. Multiplication is needed and used by mechanics for repairing cars by multiplying when they overhaul the engine, measure the pistons or just to put in a new gearbox or engine.
